Ukrainian Refugees Arrive at Makeshift Camps in Poland

INTERNATIONAL: More refugees arrived in the eastern Polish town of Przemysl on Tuesday, 1 March, a place which has become a hub for people escaping Russian military action.

Across Poland's busiest border crossing in Medyka, officials load new arrivals into buses and send them to a reception center in Przemysl where friends, family members and volunteers await. There is a makeshift camp created to coordinate the arrivals and provide refugees with food, clothes and other supplies.

Since the start of Russia's invasion last week, the head of a UN agency has reported that more than half a million people have so far fled Ukraine to neighboring countries. Additionally, European Union (EU) officials predict the war could displace 7 million people.

According to Polish border authorities, more than 320,000 people have entered Poland since 24 February, with roughly 73,000 having arrived just on Monday (28 February). Most of the arrivals are young children and women, as men of conscription age (between the ages of 18 and 60) are barred from leaving Ukraine and required to stay and fight.

The EU has also said that it would grant Ukrainians the right to work and stay in member states of the EU for up to three years.
